Chapter 3: Self-Publishing vs Drop Shipping

Out of the five areas that you could invest your time and effort in, there are two that are going to be major avenues of profit in the coming year. The key success factor in a laptop lifestyle is that you put in the least amount of repetitive effort for the most amount of recurring return. That way, once you stop focusing on one area and you shift that focus on to the next, the first area you focused on is still generating income, while you avert your attention to the second area. By the time you get to the third, the first and second endeavors are still generating income and this keeps going.

When looking at self-publishing, the king of the hill is Amazon. Under the Amazon umbrella, there are a number of self-publishing avenues. The oldest is the Kindle E-book platform where you can write books of fiction or non-fiction and put it on their website for free. There are a long string of millionaires who have been writing books for this channel for more than a decade now, and then they have books that are printed on demand. Admittedly, the growth for this market is shrinking, as the millennial reading market prefers to consume their content in electronic form or in audible form.

This brings us to the important part of this chapter and the area that you should focus on right now. Even if you don’t decide to give up your day job and become an online maverick, this is one area that you definitely should jump into with both feet without delay.

This is the area of audiobooks. Audiobooks have opened up a whole new market among Millennials and the prior generations alike. The appeal of audiobooks is that one can get the benefit of reading, while not having to read. It stimulates the imagination and, more importantly, it has been, as an industry, one of the fastest growing in the last year and is expected to be the fastest growing segment of the self-publishing eco-system.

If you have already been publishing books, then this is just a stone's throw in terms of a reach for you because you already have the rights to your material – you now just need to convert it to audio format. If you have a great voice and are good at reading, there are numerous free applications that you can download on your computer and get started. However, it is recommended that you outsource this to a professional.
